With over forty years of combined experience, the doctors and staff at Somerset Plastic Surgery have seen how cosmetic surgery can change lives for the better. From the simplest cosmetic procedures to the most serious reconstructive surgeries, cosmetic surgery has continued to help patients with cosmetic alterations. As procedures become safer and more affordable, surgery may continue to be popular in the United States:
The Rising Popularity of Cosmetic Surgery
With the rise of the self-care movement online, cosmetic surgery has become increasingly accepted in the United States. And though medical insurance doesn’t often cover many elective surgery options, most cosmetic surgeries have become more affordable and available for everyday people. The surge of social media has been a boon to the public perception of modern plastic surgery. As people see their friends and loved ones discovering the benefits and safety of cosmetic procedures, opinions have improved.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (or ASPS), more people than ever are choosing to undergo cosmetic procedures. There are many reasons why people are choosing to have cosmetic work done, but some of the top reasons include:
- A desire for greater self-confidence
- The convenience and safety of current cosmetic procedures
- The desire to obtain health benefits, including excess sweating, chronic headaches and migraines, repeated infections, and even symptoms of depression
- Plastic surgery has become more acceptable in their families and communities
- Many surgeries have become safer and less invasive
At Somerset Plastic Surgery, we have helped thousands of patients discover better health and healing through cosmetic surgery. We offer many different types of surgery, including some of the most popular, such as nose reshaping and breast augmentation. With recent advancements in tools and techniques, cosmetic surgery is more safe and effective than ever before.
The Different Types of Cosmetic Procedures
The ASPS annually publishes statistics about the many types of procedures performed in the United States. They divide most cosmetic surgeries into three different categories:
- Minimally-invasive procedures, which include procedures such as Botox injections, soft tissue filler, chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing.
- Reconstructive surgical procedures, which includes laceration repair, scar removal, tumor removal, and most maxillofacial procedures.
- General cosmetic procedures, which include some of the most popular procedures such as breast augmentation surgery, facelifts, and liposuction.
According to their 2020 report, about 15.6 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States that year. Of these procedures, while the number of general procedures decreased, the number of reconstructive surgeries rose dramatically. It is unclear if the economic conditions in 2020 alone limited the average person from these cosmetic procedures. But year after year, reconstructive surgeries that provide comfort and relief continue to rise in both number and popularity.
One interesting fact is that cosmetic surgery in general is just as popular for men as it is for women. According to the 2020 report, the number of minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed on both men and women is nearly the same (around 4.4 million). At Somerset, our expert surgeons work with patients of all backgrounds to provide long-lasting results.
Which Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Are the Most Common?
At Somerset Plastic Surgery, our surgical team offers a full range of skin, beauty, and health treatments, including some of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the industry. These include three of the most popular procedures, according to the 2020 ASPS Report:
Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, is a procedure that changes the overall shape of the nose. This can include adjusting the interior shape, changing the width of the nostrils, or correcting a birth defect. Sometimes it can even improve the patient’s ability to breathe. More than 350,000 rhinoplasty procedures were performed in 2020, making it the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure that year.
Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox Injections)
Botulinum toxin (commonly known by the brand name Botox) is a neurotoxic protein found in a certain type of bacteria. When injected under the skin, the protein blocks nerve signals and weakens muscles, providing a smooth and wrinkle-free complexion. Botox injections were the most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure in 2020 by far, with over 4.4 million procedures performed.
Tumor Removal
Over 5.2 million cosmetic tumor removal surgeries were performed in 2020. While tumor removal isn’t often thought about as cosmetic surgery, the removal of lipomas (fatty tissues that grow beneath the skin) has become a very common procedure. While often not life-threatening, they can be unsightly or even uncomfortable. Surgery to remove a lipoma is usually simple, often not requiring general anesthesia.
