A facelift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that addresses signs of aging by tightening the skin and muscles of the face. The results are long-lasting and offer a more youthful appearance. Here is more information on how to prepare for your facelift:

Avoid Smoking and Drinking Alcohol

One way to prepare for your cosmetic surgery is to quit smoking for at least four weeks before your procedure. Smoking impacts the oxygen levels within your body and circulatory system, prolonging your recovery. This includes inhaling secondary smoke. Secondary smoke exposure includes smoke from burning tobacco products and smoke that is exhaled.

Drinking alcohol before your procedure can cause a variety of complications, like increased bleeding and anesthesia interference. We recommend abstaining from alcohol for at least forty-eight hours before your surgery to lessen your risk of complications. If you do drink alcohol or smoke, please let us know so that we are able to accommodate your needs properly.

Keep Your Pre-Op Appointment

A pre-operative assessment is a normal part of any type of surgery. It assesses your overall health and condition. During this appointment, you will be asked about your medical history, including whether you’ve had any other surgeries. The physical exam may include blood or urine testing.

This exam is normally done within a month of your surgery and lasts one to two hours. You will learn about your surgery preparation plans, such as medication changes, diet adjustments, and aftercare instructions. Wear loose-fitting clothing for enhanced comfort during the appointment.

Prepare for Medication Changes

During your consultation, one of our experienced surgeons will ask you about your current medication routine. You may have to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, aspirin, or anti-inflammatories. Bringing your current prescriptions to your consultation allows your doctor to make a comprehensive medication plan for your recovery.

After your surgery, you may also be prescribed different medications. Antibiotics and narcotics are meant to be taken as directed, and you should not stop taking them until the prescription is completely gone. Even if your symptoms go away, bacteria may still be present and will grow resistant to future medication treatments.

Eat a Healthy Diet

A balanced diet offers protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates. Plenty of water and fluids like tea are also recommended to keep you hydrated. Chicken, brown rice, and spinach provide nutritional value. Your body will need these nutrients during recovery as well. Preparing frozen meals before your procedure gives you an easy, healthy option that takes just a few minutes to warm up.

After your facelift, we recommend switching to soft foods and plenty of fluids. Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and soups prevent discomfort while chewing. Fiber-rich foods, such as yogurt, beans, lentils, and berries, help keep your digestive system regular, especially if you are taking antibiotics.

Make Recovery Arrangements

Once you have a scheduled day and time for your surgery, it’s beneficial to begin making the necessary arrangements. Schedule some time off of work and stock your pantry and fridge with easy meals. Your surgeon will inform you of when to stop eating and drinking before your surgery. An empty stomach is beneficial and often required before surgeries, as anesthesia can cause nausea.

Now is the time to contact a person you trust to take you to your appointment and back home. This is because we typically use general anesthesia during your procedure. General anesthesia will put you into a sleep-like state, and if it takes a few hours to wear off, you will not be able to drive. Once we determine that you are safely awake after your procedure, you will be able to go home to recover comfortably.

Prepare fresh, clean sheets for your bed the night before your procedure. Give yourself plenty of clean towels to use, as you may want to shower or bathe after you are finished with your appointment. Be careful not to get the bandages wet from your facelift.

Practice Self Care

Continue to exercise and engage in your favorite activities leading up to your procedure. Staying active can improve your recovery experience with fewer risks and less downtime. Hobbies like reading, taking a walk, or listening to music could also help you relax. Getting enough sleep allows your body to rest and heal before and after your facelift.

To lessen the risk of infections, take a bath or shower the night before and morning of your surgery. We recommend washing your entire body, including your face and hair. Wear clean, comfortable clothes for your appointment. Avoid wearing makeup, heavy creams or lotions, and hair products on the day of your surgery.
